This hand colored aquatint titled New York Militia, is from the second but limited edition of George Walker’s Costume of Yorkshire, published by Richard Jackson, Leeds, 1885.First published in 1814, it contained forty aquatint plates, each depicting an aspect of Yorkshire life in 1814. Each plate was accompanied by a page or more of text and a wide range of economic and social topics are included. Forty different types of professions and trades were included ranging from horse dealers to hawking, leech finders to military men.

George Walker (1781-1856) was born in England and after being educated in York, he became an artist concentrating on local and rural landscapes. As his reputation as a good artist grew, he was commissioned by a local bookseller to do a series of paintings for Costumes of Yorkshire.

Size and Condition

This is plate # 31, New York Militia, which shows the uniform of riflemen from a Light Infantry Regiment. A soldier is posed in the foreground with his rifle, and in the background are two soldiers taking aim. Condition is very good and the original text and a copy of the title page are included. The overall paper size is approximately 12 ¾” x 17 ½”.
