This bird engraving is from Volume III, published1816, of Edward Donovan’s THE NATURAL HISTORY OF BRITISH BIRDS. Published in London in ten volumes from 1794-1819, the work contained, as his subtitle claimed, “a selection of the most rare, beautiful and interesting birds which inhabit this country.”

Edward Donovan, 1768-1837, was an Irish writer, traveler and amateur zoologist. He was the founder of the London Museum and Institute of Natural History, which contained his extensive natural history collection which was eventually sold at auction in 1817.

Donovan drew, etched, engraved and colored all of his illustrations by hand. He usually chose the more brightly colored males to paint in gouache paint. He also colored the foregrounds of tree branches, grass and stones. His work is recognized as artistically good and his drawings show a great deal of originality.
