This is a gorgeous chromolithograph, Maranta Vanden Heckei, with hand color added, from Flores des Serres (Flowers from the Greenhouse) by Louis van Houtte. Published Belgium, 1846-1883, it was an extensive work with over 2,000 colored plates.
Louis Benoit van Houtte (1810-1876) was a Belgian horticulturist. He was associated with the Jardin Botanique de Brussels from 1836-1839. After an expedition to Brazil, he went to Gent where he founded the Ecole d’Horticulture and the horticultural journal Flores des Serres et des Jardins de l’Europe.
In 1845 he began sending out plant collectors to bring back orchids and other exotic plants from South and Central America. His company propagated many of these plants for European greenhouses. By 1870 he owned the most flourishing nursery in Belgium.
Maranta Vanden Heckei is known as a Peacock plant and is grown in gardens for the handsomely patterned foliage. It is also often used as a house plant. This chromolithograph is a beautiful rendering of this plant with vibrant green and reddish colors in the leaves. The composition shows two large leaves, the plant growing in the ground and a detail of the flower. Condition is quite good with overall age toning and a small spot toward the top of the print. Evidence of the original book binding is on the right side. Overall size is approximately 6 ½” x 10 ¼” and a copy of a sample title page is included.
