These three original, hand colored steel engravings are from William Jardine’s THE NATURALIST’S LIBRARY which was published between 1833-1843, Edinburgh.
This famous work was comprised of 40 small, affordable volumes which were divided into four sections – birds, mammals, fish and insects.
Sir William Jardine (1800-1874) was a key figure in the history of Victorian-era science. He owned the finest private natural history museum and library in Britain. Jardine was also a very gifted naturalist and artist and many of his original water colors are part of the collection in London’s Natural History Museum and the Royal Scottish Museum in Edinburgh.
Many of Britain’s finest wildlife artists and illustrations were commissioned by Jardine to create the drawings from which the engravings were made. Scottish artist, William Lizars, who was also Jardine’s brother-in-law, engraved these volumes for Jardine.
