This is a hand coloured wood engraving from the first edition of Beverely R. Morris' BRITISH GAME BIRDS AND WILDFOWL, with illustrations by B. Fawcett, published London, 1855. This work contained sixty colored plates of game birds and waterfowl and was such a success that it was revised with a fourth edition being issued in 1895.
Beverley Morris was a younger brother of famous British ornithologist, Francis Morris. BRITISH GAME BIRDS... was "a collection of accounts of British game birds, with a statement of the distribution and habits of the species and descriptions of the birds, their eggs and nests, and notes on their value as articles of food."
Size and Condition
This engraving, Shoveler, is in very good condition. The colours are bright and the approximate size is 9 3/4" x 11". A copy of the title page is included.
