This is a remarkable hand colored lithograph from Alexandre Bivort’s Annales de Pomologie with the original French text. Published in Brussels 1853-1860, there are only three complete copies in existence today. The work depicted fruits raised in Brussels and nearby countries during the mid nineteenth century.
The fruit studies were in a very simple format and there is often a single fruit shown on a twig with leaves. Bivort wanted the fruits to be shown realistically and in some of the drawings damaged and imperfect specimens were shown. In this lithograph, Drap D’Or,
two peaches are shown on a twin surrounded by leaves.
Alexandre Bivort (1809-1872) was a Belgian horticulturist who bred a number of new fruit varieties. In addition to Annales de Pomologie, he published Annales de Pomologie Belge et Etrangere (1853-1860). These two works are the classic reference on Belgian fruit of the era.
