This is a hand colored wood engraving, Black Grouse, from the first edition of Beverly R. Morris’ BRITISH GAME BIRDS AND WILDFOWL, with illustrations by B. Fawcett. Published London, 1855, this work contained sixty colored plates of game birds and waterfowl and was such a success that it was revised with a fourth edition being issued in 1895.
Beverly Morris was a younger brother of famous British ornithologist, Francis Morris. BRITISH GAME BIRDS….was “a collection of accounts of British game birds, with a statement of the distribution and habits of the species and descriptions of the birds, their eggs and nests and notes on their value as articles of food.”
CONDITION and SIZE
This engraving, Black Grouse, is in very good condition and the bird is very accurately drawn and colored. The paper has overall age toning with light soiling mainly at the margin edges. There are two yellow spots at the left by the bird’s tail and a small piece of brown hinging tape on the back upper right corner. Evidence of the original book binding is at the bottom edge. Colors are still very vivid and the engraving size is approximately 10” x 12 ½”. A copy of the title page is included.
