This bird print is from Volume III published 1816, of Edward Donovan’s THE NATURAL HISTORY OF BRITISH BIRDS. Published in London in ten volumes from 1794-1819, the work contained, as his subtitle claimed, “a selection of the most rare, beautiful and interesting birds which inhabit this country.”
Edward Donovan, 1768-1837, was an Irish writer, traveler and amateur zoologist. He was the founder of the London Museum and Institute of Natural History, which contained his extensive natural history collection which was eventually sold at auction in 1817.
Size and Condition
This is plate 146, Sanderling Plover, and is a copperplate engraving on fine wove paper with original hand coloring. The condition is very good with just a few minor spots barely visible. Evidence of the original binding is on the right side of the print. The size is approximately 5 7/8” x 9 1/2”. The original text is included along with a copy of the title page.
