This very desirable sporting print, part of the title page, is a hand colored engraving from the second edition of THE BRITISH SPORTSMAN by Samuel Howitt. It was published in London, 1812, by Edward Orme. This work contained 70 plates which illustrated every manner of sport on field and river.
Samuel Howitt (1756-1822) was a British professional artist specializing in sporting subjects. He began as an amateur but due to financial difficulty he turned professional. He married the sister of the celebrated caricaturist, Thomas Rowlandson.
Edward Orme was a print seller and publisher to his Majesty and the Prince Regent in the early 1800’s. He was a prolific engraver and is also known for his whaling and nautical engravings. This engraving used as the introduction to the work, shows an assortment of hunted prey including deer and fish.
Size and Condition
Condition is good although there is age toning and some light staining mostly in the margin areas. On heavy wove paper with a strong plate mark the overall size is approximately 7 ¾” x 10 3/8”.
