This is a rare 18th century hand colored copperplate engraving, Mesembryanthemum nodiflorum, (ice plant), on hand laid watermarked paper. By Georg Wolfgang Knorr, it is from Thesaurus Rei Herbarie Hortensisque Universalis which was published Nuremberg, 1750-1772.
In this magnificent work which is considered the most beautiful of 18th century German botanical books, the plants are identified by both their common and scientific names. Included were 300 hand colored plates, mostly by and after the artist.
Knorr (1705-1761) was born in Nuremberg and was a paleontologist as well as an outstanding painter, draftsman and engraver. He began engraving at the age of 18 and went on to publish several scientific works, all distinguished by the beautiful hand coloring and precise engraving skill.
Mesembryanthemum nodiflorum is a species of succulent plant in the ice plant family known by the common name, slenderleaf ice plant.
Condition and Size;
This rare engraving is in very good condition with normal age paper toning and a few faint spots. There is some browning at the paper edges. The original hand coloring is still vibrant and the paper is a soft cream color. Evidence of the original book binding is on the left side. The size is approximately 9 ¾” x 14 ½”. This rare engraving will be even more beautiful when framed and anyone interested in 18th century botanical engravings will greatly appreciate this wonderful item.
