This is a beautiful original hand colored stipple engraving from “Reminiscenze Pittoriche Di Firenze (Pictorial Reminiscences of Florence) published Italy, 1840. The work was recommended for “artists and lovers of the glory of the country.”
Titled Causae Nostrae, this engraving shows Mary holding the Christ Child while a young, perhaps a saint, boy is at her side. This engraving is from a painting by Andrea del Sarto, an Italian Renaissance painter. Each figure has a halo over their head and the faces have a porcelain quality. The hand coloring is exquisite with rich deep colors. This is a beautiful composition and reminiscent of a stained glass window.
Size and Condition
The image itself is in finc condition with some soiling confined to the margin areas. Evidence of the original book binding is on the right side. The overall paper size is approximately 10 ½” x 7 ¼” and a copy of the title page is included.
