This beautiful, hand colored aquatint print, The Statue Gallery, is from Rudolph Ackermann’s two volume work, “A History of the University of Oxford, Its Colleges, and Public Buildings”, published London, 1814. This famous work portrayed magnificent views of the interiors and exteriors of Oxford University as well as official costumes of the faculty.
Rudolph Ackermann was born in Germany in 1764 and in his twenties he moved to England to train as a lithographer. In 1795, he opened a print shop where he sold books, prints, artist materials and exhibited paintings. He was a very talented lithographer and he published many attractive color-plate books. In addition, he published magazines such as The Repository of Arts. Ackermann died in 1834.
