An original hand colored lithograph from Robert Ronald McIan’s, The Class of the Scottish Highlands, published London, Ackermann & Co., 1845-1857. This was a major undertaking by McIan to illustrate the clans and costumes of Scottish Highlanders. Apparently when Queen Victoria became interested in her Scottish heritage, this inspired McIan and James Logan, who wrote the text, to do extensive research into the clans and the prints represent a primary source for anyone interested in the clans and their tartans.

McIan was born in Scotland in 1803 and in his late teens moved to London to pursue his passion for acting and he joined the Covenant Garden Theatre. In the 1830’s he pursued his second major passion, painting and his first work was submitted to the Royal Academy of Painting in London. By the early 1840’s he left the stage and concentrated on his painting.
In this lithograph of the MacAulay clan, the figure of a man is shown wearing the traditional red and green tartan dress kilt. He is posed with a typical Scottish view in the background.
