This is a very fine copperplate engraving on hand laid paper from HEADS OF ILLUSTRIOUS PERSONS OF GREAT BRITIAN, published in parts in London between circa 1740-1756. The highly detailed and very decorative engravings were done by Jacobus Houbraken (1698-1780) and George Virtue (1684-1756). Houbraken was a highly respected and well know portrait engraver and George Virtue was an
historian and artist.
This work contained portraits of people of note such as Mary Queen of Scots, Anne
Bolyn, Oliver Cromwell, Henry VII to name a few. Kings, Queens, Dukes, Lords, Earls
as well as Bishops were included.
This beautiful portrait of Thomas Tollemache is signed in plate: “J. Houbraken sculps.
Amst. 1741. Also inscribed is “In the collection of the right Hon. The Earl of Dysert” These portraits were
printed in black and white.

Size and Condition
Condition is very good with normal paper age toning. There is evidence of the original bookbinding on each engraving. This is a rare opportunity to purchase such a historic collection of early British portrait engravings. As a bonus, it includes the original text page. Approximate size is 9.75 x 15.5 inches.
