This is an excellent example of a Giuseppe Vasi copperplate engraving on fine, chain link paper. The original engravings were published circa 1756. It is possible that this engraving, Plate 105, Chiesa di S. Llorenzo in Lucina, is a later restrike from the original copper plate due to the large watermark which is clearer than 18th century watermarks.
Giuseppe Vasi was born in 1710 in Corleone, Sicily and died in Rome, 1782. He was an engraver of great renown and talent and his pupils included Giovanni Battista Piranesi. He was also an architect and he paid very careful attention to all the details of the churches, palaces and buildings that he illustrated in his etchings. He published ten books of etchings between 1746 and 1761 entitled “Splendours of Ancient and Modern Rome.” This is his most famous work which documents the most famous places and monuments of ancient and modern Rome.
This church is dedicated to St. Lawrence a Roman deacon and martyr. It is located in Piazza San Lorenzo in the Rione Colona. Typical of these views, there is activity with people walking and horsedrawn carriages.
CONDITION AND SIZE
This is a very crisp engraving with a very distinct platemark and the condition is very good with no foxing or discoloration other than a few light spots and creases in the margin areas. Three of the corners show a little wear. Overall size is approximately 12 x 15 ½”.
