This is an original, hand colored copperplate engraving Otis, mas, L’Outarde Male on fine wove paper by George Edwards from Gleanings of Natural History. Published 1758-1764.

Gleanings of Natural History and A Natural History of Uncommon Birds also by Edwards, illustrated for the first time many foreign species often drawn from live specimens held in captivity in London. Edwards etched his own plates and he hand colored several copies before supervising others in the coloring. The two works are now considered as one with 362 plates in all. (318 are birds and the balance various mammals, fish and insects.

George Edwards, a natural history draughtsman, was born at Stratford, in Essex, in 1697 and died in 1773. Called the “father of British ornithology,” in 1735 he as appointed librarian to the Royal College of Physicians in London where he sketched natural curiosities in the President’s private museum.

Edwards engraved the plates himself and hand colored most of the engravings. If he supervised the coloring he was very particular about this task. He resolved never to part with any uncolored etched prints which he was alive in case unskilled colorers should work on them.
