A beautiful and rare 18th century engraving, “Akeroo Castle” and “Adoo Estate” is from Count Erik Dahlberg’s historic work SUECIA ANTIQUA et HODIERNA which was published in Sweden posthumously in 1717. In its final state, this work comprised three volumes with a total of 353 plates.

Count Erik Dahlberg (1625-1703) was a Swedish soldier, engineer and graphic artist who served with distinction in the Swedish war against Denmark and the Great Northern War. He also directed fortifications as part of the military rebuilding program of King Charles XI. After many years in the field, Dahlberg returned to Stockholm and began observing the city with pencil in hand. His drawings were in part intended for a planned collection of engravings which were to show foreigners “how much there is in our native country which is great and beautiful.”

For 43 years of his life, Dahlberg spent his time illustrating and overseeing the creation of this great publication. Other notable copperplate engravers who also contributed to this work were Jean Le Pautre, Jean Marot and Adam Perelle. Beginning in 1668 it was not completed until after Dahlberg’s death. The SUECIA is best described as a grand vision of Sweden during its period as a world power.

This Dahlberg engraving has two separate views and is on fine, chain-linked paper. The upper engraving is a view of the Akeroo Castle and the lower engraving is a view of an estate in Adoo, Sweden.
