This is an extremely rare copperplate engraving on hand laid paper circa 1690. The figure shown is Rufus of Ephesus, (late 1st century AD) an ancient Greek physician and author who wrote treatises on dietetics, pathology, anatomy and patient care. He was to some extent, a follower of Hippocrates and his writings dealt with subjects often neglected by other authors such as the treatment of slaves and the elderly. His teachings emphasized the importance of anatomy and sought pragmatic approaches to diagnosis and treatment.
A very fine engraving, this item is thought to be from a 17th century work on Doctors of Medicine and Early Founders of Medical Science Greek and Roman.
Size and Condition
For its age, this engraving is in remarkably fine condition. The hand laid paper has some minor yellowing at the bottom margin and a small crease in the lower right margin area. Typical of some 17th century copperplate engravings, the image is not centered on the paper. There is a strong plate mark and the overall paper size is approximately 9 ½” x 17 ½”. This indeed is a rare and very collectible medical science engraving.
