This is a beautiful color-printed aquatint, finished by hand, Point Piccolo, first published separately in 1801, 1802 and 1803, London, for Sir Robert Ainslie. Sir Ainslie (1730-1812) was Ambassador to Constantinople from 1776-1792 where he also studied ancient architecture and collected antique coins. The 71 aquatints from Views in the Ottoman Dominions, in Europe in Asia, and some of the Mediterranean Islands, were published as a collection, London, 1810.The work was printed in 1809 by T. Bensley for R. Bower who dedicated this work to the Prince of Wales.
Luigi Mayer was an Italian born artist of German descent. The aquatint engraver, Thomas Milton, studied under William Woollett and was extolled by scholar, W. Bell Scott, as having “a unique power of distinguishing the foliage of trees and the texture of bodies, especially water, as it never had been done before and will never be done again.”
This aquatint, Ponte Piccolo, published 1809, is characteristic of those made during the Regency period, a time of exploration of the Middle East spurred by Napoleon’s explorations and conquests in Egypt. Often these expeditions were published as books containing descriptions and illustrations of the ancient architecture, customs and cultures of indigenous peoples.
