This is a stone lithograph, plate # 55, Red Tailed Squirrel, from Volume II of The Quadrupeds of North America, by John James Audubon and The Rev. John Bachman. This octovo volume was published New York, 1854. The lithographer was J.T. Bowen, Philadelphia. The background was printed in color while the animal, the landscape, etc. was finished by watercolor paints applied by hand.
Upon completion of his great work The Birds of America, Audubon embarked on a western journey in an attempt to render all the four legged creatures of North America. He traveled west through much uncharted territory, chased herds of buffalo, traded with Indians for furs and skins and finally, with the assistance of his long time friend, Reverend John Bachman in writing the text, produced The Quadrupeds of North America. The animals were set in natural surroundings and the landscapes were often the first view of America west of the Mississippi. The result was 155 animals from the common American mouse to the American buffalo.
The large, Imperial Folio Edition was published 1845-1848 and was originally sold by subscription. The octavo, or smaller edition, was the creation of Audubon’s sons, Victor Gifford Audubon and John Woodhouse Audubon and was more affordable for the general public Audubon’s two sons accompanied him on his western journey and they painted animals and landscapes. Published in three volumes, production of the smaller lithographs began in 1849-1856. A fourth edition, known as the Lockwood edition was published 1870-71.
Size and Condition
Overall, this lithograph, Red Tailed Squirrel is in good condition with normal age toning and some light soiling. There are some light whitish spots in the sky area.
Evidence of the original bookbinding is on the left edge. The hand coloring is still vivid and beautiful Overall size is approximately 6¾” x 10 ¼” and a copy of the title page is included along with a copy and a page of original text.
