This hand colored lithograph of the Fork Tailed Gull, Male, is an original, first edition, Audubon lithograph from Birds of America, the Royal Octavo Edition, Volume I, 1840. This edition was completed under the direct supervision of Audubon with the hand coloring and lithography under the supervision of J.T. Bowen.
The success of Audubon’s large folio work on birds published 1826-1838, resulted in the publication of a smaller and more affordable work and included more birds. About one-eighth the size of the original engravings, the smaller or octavo size bird prints had the same quality and accuracy of the larger work. The right hand corner had the plate number and as these prints were sold by subscription, the subscription number was on the upper left side.
Size and Condition
This beautifully engraved and hand colored lithograph, Fork Tailed Gull, Male, Plate 441, is in good condition and is on fine wove paper. There is some light creasing and evidence of the original bookbinding is on the bottom edge. The paper size is approximately 6 ½” x 10” and a copy of the title page is included. As a bonus, the original text is included
